2005 Writing Contest Entries Due June 1

If you, one, or both of your birth parents were born outside of North America, you may qualify to enter the Fire Escape's Teen Writing Contests! Read the rules and submit your entries by June 1st. I can't wait to award prizes for the best poems and stories about life between cultures. This is the third year in a row for the contest; I send out snazzy certificates along with the checks, so don't miss out! You may read past winning entries on the Fire Escape.

How do you manage contest rules and regulations? How did you write your privacy policy?

I made up the rules and regulations because this contest is the one place where I'm in charge. I verify entries by asking winners to send me the name and number of a teacher/librarian. I then telephone the teacher to ensure that the entrant is legitimate. The kids send me their mailing addresses, and I also give them my phone number so that their parents may call to verify me. The prizes are sent via personal check. The great part is that I've kept up with a few of the winners, and they tell me about their graduations, college decisions, etc.

My privacy policy was commandeered and patched together from a few respected websites that publish kids' and teens' writing. I wanted to be sure I was in compliance with COPPA laws. If you have any other questions, let me know.
